Cobhams Emmanuel Asuquo, born January 6, 1981, better known as Cobhams Asuquo, is a prolific Nigerian musician, producer, and songwriter. He signed with Sony ATV London as a songwriter in 2005. Cobhams gained recognition after producing Asa’s debut album.
Cobhams Asuquo Early Life and Education
Cobhams left the University of Lagos as a 300-level law student to pursue his musical career full-time. “I had to sleep on studio floors all over Lagos, work at various studios, work without pay, I’ve been out on the road, out on the streets, doing my thing.” “I had to persuade people that I could do it — I had sessions canceled because they weren’t sure I could deliver, either because they thought I was too young or because they thought, as a blind person, ‘how do we trust our music, which is our future and investment?'” he explained.
Based on his careful study of such classical, jazz, and traditional music greats as Tchaikovsky, Dave Grusin, and Haruna Isola, his style encompasses a wide range of genres.
He used to organize neighborhood concerts as a child, drumming on his mother’s water barrels. “All the kids from the next block would come over and we’d hang out and make a lot of noise.” “I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was preparing myself for my life, career path, and destiny,” Asuquo recalls.
