Deborah Oluwaseyi Joshua, better known as Seyi Shay, is a British-Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress who was born Oluwaseyi Joshua on December 21, 1985. She wrote and produced three songs for the soundtrack of the Konami video game Crime Life: Gang Wars (2005).
She also contributed to Melanie C’s third studio album, Beautiful Intentions, with the song “You Will See” (2005). “White Lies,” written by Shay, appears on Chip’s Transition album. In 2008, she rose to fame as the lead singer of the now-defunct pop girl group From Above.
The band signed a recording contract with Sony’s Columbia Records and was managed by Mathew Knowles‘ Music World Entertainment. Shay signed an endorsement deal with Etisalat, a telecommunications service provider, in November 2013.
She signed a record deal with Island Records in July 2015. She signed a two-year endorsement deal with Pepsi in 2015. In November 2015, Shay released her debut studio album, Seyi or Shay. It was accompanied by promotional singles such as “Irawo,” “Ragga Ragga,” “Right Now,” and “Murda,” which featured Patoranking and Shaydee.
She signed a publishing deal with Universal Music Publishing Group France division in January 2021, in collaboration with Universal Music France.

Shay was born to Nigerian parents in Tottenham, London, England. Her mother was born in Northern Nigeria, and her father in Ife. She has two brothers and one sister as older siblings. Her single mother was the sole provider for her and her siblings. Shay grew up in a Christian home.
She often felt like a single child during her adolescence because she was the only child between her mother and father. She first visited Nigeria when she was two years old and eventually attended the Command High School in Maryland, Lagos. She returned to London to complete her undergraduate studies, earning a BA Hons in Music Business Management from the University of East London.
Members of her family influenced her musical interest. Her late mother was a chorister, her sister used to write songs for the BBC, and her brother was a well-known London club and radio DJ. Shay joined her secondary school choir at the age of six and began performing.
She sang for the London Community Gospel Choir on their world tour, which included 13 stops in Japan. Shay revealed to Lanre Odukoya of Thisday that her mother was not a big fan of her musical ambitions. Her mother also desired that she become a doctor or a lawyer. Her mother advised her before she died to concentrate on her music career and to put God first.

Shay made the decision to enter the From Above UK singing competition after the band broke up after two years. She was chosen as the lead vocalist for the now-defunct girl group From Above following the audition. The band signed a record deal with Mathew Knowles’ management company after performing for him. They were whisked away to Houston for intensive vocal and dance training.
Her music career took off when she signed her first record deal with No Apologies, a record label owned by Sir George Martin (dubbed the “Fifth Beatle” by fans). In 2006, Shay founded the girl band Boadicea, which was managed by Ron Tom, the founder and manager of All Saints and Sugababes.
The group provided support for Beyoncé during her I Am World Tour in the United Kingdom. They presented Bruno Mars with the Best New Act award at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards and had their own MTV reality show called Breaking From Above, which aired in over 166 countries worldwide.
After the group disbanded, Shay had the opportunity to continue her management contract with Mathew Knowles as well as secure a recording contract with Sony. Instead, she accepted an offer from Fly Time Music and decided to join them. Shay has collaborated with artists such as Justin Timberlake, Brian Michael Cox, Darey, Bilal, Michelle Williams, Chip, Rob Knoxx, H-Money, and Cameron Wallace.
Shay first met Sound Sultan during a trip to London in 2011. Sultan persuaded her to relocate to Nigeria and pursue her musical career after hearing some of her demos. Shay was introduced to Cecil Hammond of Fly Time Promotions in addition to Sultan. Hammond decided to launch her solo career in Nigeria after signing her to his record label, Fly Time Music.
In 2021, she was one of the judges at the Nigerian Idol Reality TV Show alongside DJ Sose and Obi Asika
