Kola Oyewo Biography
Kola Oyewo is a Nigerian veteran actor, dramatist and scholar born on March 27, 1946 in Oba Ile, a town in Osun State, South Western part of Nigeria.
Kola Oyewo Early Life and Education
Oyewo attended Obafemi Awolowo University where he obtained a certificate in dramatic arts, a certificate in Yoruba oral literature before he later received a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Theatre art from the same university in 1995. He proceeded to the University of Ibadan where he received a Master of Arts (M.A.) and doctorate degree (Ph.D) in drama.
Kola Oyewo Career
Before becoming a lecturer, Oyewo worked as an actor. He began his acting career in Osogbo, Osun State, with the Oyin Adejobi theatre group. It was one of the most well-known Yoruba traveling theater groups at the time. From 1964 to 1973, he worked there for nine years. In 1973, he enrolled in the Ori Olokun Cultural Studies program at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University). They later relocated to campus, and the theatre group, like the university, changed its name to Awo varsity theatre.
Fame came the way of Oyewo in Tunde Kelani’s movie ‘Kosegbe’ where he played Mako, an incorruptible custom boss. Oyewo had his first degree from the OAU, where he was his son’s classmate. He later proceeded to University of Ibadan where he earned his PhD. He was a senior lecturer at the OAU until 2011 before he moved on to head the department of dramatic arts in Redeemer’s University.
After retiring from Obafemi Awolowo University, he joined the services of Redeemer’s University, where he currently serves as head of the department of dramatic art. He is currently working at Elizade University Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State as a performing arts lecturer
