Yemi Ajibade Early Life and Eduaction
He went to Abeokuta Grammar School and was only known by his first name, Yemi Ajibade. His early education in Abeokuta established the groundwork for his lifelong passion for the performing arts and the arts in general. Yemi traveled to the United Kingdom in the middle of the 1950s with the intention of pursuing a career as a journalist. While there, however, he read a book about
Stanislavsky and concluded to himself, “This is it.” In 1960, Yemi became a member of the Actors Workshop, and in 1966, she enrolled in the London School of Film Technique, which is now known as the London Film School. In later years, he attended Royal Holloway, University of London to earn his master’s degree.
Yemi Ajibade Career
Ajibade started acting in radio dramas for the BBC African Service not long after he arrived in the United Kingdom. When the World Service approached the BBC producer John Stockbridge in the 1960s with the idea of creating a play for African listeners, Stockbridge cast Ajibade, who was then a promising young actor, in the lead part. Stockbridge chose Ajibade for this role.
The television series was never produced, although beyond that point, Yemi was frequently featured on radio programs. Television producers also took notice of his abilities, and he went on to feature in a number of shows, such as Danger Man (1965), Dixon of Dock Green (1968), The Black Safari (1972), and The Fosters (1973). (1976).
In the play Parcel Post (1976), written by Yemi, the author investigated the contrast between the values of modern Britain and the traditional African morals. At the Royal Court in London, it was directed by Donald Howarth, and in 2006, at the festivities of the theatre’s 50th birthday, Howarth noted that the play had a “reconditioning” effect on the audiences. Fingers Only (1982), Waiting for Hannibal (1986), Para Ginto (1995) (Peer Gynt relocated to African soil), and A Long Way From Home were some of Yemi’s other theater pieces (1991).
As part of the festivities for Africa 95, Jude Kelly, in his capacity as creative director of the West Yorkshire Playhouse, extended an invitation to Yemi to participate in the production of Wole Soyinka’s Beatification of Area Boy. His final performance was in 2007’s production of Emperor Jones, which was directed by Thea Sharrock and took place on the Olivier stage at the National Theatre.
