He is from Enugu’s Nkanu West L.G.A. After finishing primary school, John Okafor moved to Sapele, Delta state, to live with his brother after his father died. In Sapele, he worked menial jobs to make ends meet, sponsor himself to school, and support his family. He then worked as a hairstylist, ventured into photography, and also worked in a crates manufacturing company. He was admitted to the College of Education, Yola, after finishing secondary school, but withdrew due to financial difficulties. He later attended the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) as soon as he could afford it.
