Renowned veteran actor Akin Lewis marked a significant milestone in his life as he celebrated his 50th birthday.
With a career spanning several decades and numerous memorable performances, Akin Lewis has become a household name in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
As he reached this remarkable milestone, the talented actor took a moment to reflect on his journey, express gratitude, and offer thanks to God for His blessings.
He wrote, *LIFE BEGINS AT 50*
Today, 50 years ago, I decided that Drama would be my profession. I joined up with a theatre group led by professor Bode Sowande, an erstwhile Don of the University of Ibadan. There was such a big fight with my late Dad who felt Drama wasn’t anything to build a future on.
He was an engineer with the Nigerian Railways making good life for himself…he became a Senior Service Executive.
I had chosen a profession for dropouts as far as he could see, so I went out into the world on my own (mo bo s’owo aye).
I toiled very hard for six (6) years on stage, radio and television before breaking through with the Tele-Comedy Series which ruled the air on channels 3,4,5,7 and 11 in the early 80s…it was called WHY WORRY-the story of a 60 year old, garulous one-eyed barber.
I became a star and my battles started, physically and spiritually. I hadn’t seen anything yet. The bigger I got, the bigger my troubles got.
As a star, today, I cut across the world and I am grateful to God for that but my battles have been immense.
To be the Akin Lewis you know, I have had enemies at home, at work and at play both locally and internationally. But here l am, alive, vibrant, strong and still working. God has been working and He’s still working in my life. I am grateful.
I salute my colleagues whom I started out together with; some of whom have died, some gone on to other professions. Some are still in the country, while some are abroad.
I am grateful to my teachers who made sure I became the best. I thank my Ogas two of whom were mentors…one is still a powerful media figure and the other a banker turned a reverend gentleman.
I thank my wife and my OBAs, one of whom is above the rest. I have very few friends and numerous enemies who drove me to God and they are still around, I them all. I thank my numerous FANS as well, God bless you.
I thank God Almighty without whom I am nothing. I am Dr. Akintola Abdul-razak Akin-Lewis. MA, FTA TDG and I say Life Begins at 50!
