Bisi Akande was elected governor of Osun State on the platform of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) party in the 1999 Osun State gubernatorial election.

Akande was elected governor of Osun State for the Alliance for Democracy (AD) party in 1999.
As a political arm of the Yoruba socio-cultural organization Afenifere, the Alliance for Democracy (AD) party was formed.
Akande ran for re-election in 2003, but was defeated by Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Akande’s AD faction merged with other opposition parties in September 2006 to form the Action Congress Party, which later changed its name to the Action Congress of Nigeria.
In February 2013, the All Progressives Congress (APC) announced plans to merge with the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), and a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to form the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In 1966, Akande got married to Omowunmi Akande. She died on, Tuesday, July 12th, 2017 at the University College Hospital in Ibadan. She was aged 73. Among the children of the couple are Dr. Wuraola Solabi, who married in June 2017 in Ibadan and Osun State Commissioner for Health, Dr Temitope Ilori.
