Ernest Adegunle Oladeinde Shonekan GCFR, born May 9, 1936, was a Nigerian lawyer and statesman who served as Nigeria’s interim Head of State from August 26 to November 17, 1993.
Since 1981, Ernest Shonekan has held the title Abese of Egbaland, along with other chieftaincy titles.
Shonekan was born in Lagos to an Abeokuta-born civil servant’s family.

Shonekan was the sixth of six children born to an Abeokuta-born civil servant.
Shonekan attended CMS Grammar School and Igbobi College before earning a law degree and being called to the bar at the University of London.
He was later accepted to the prestigious Harvard Business School.

Chief Ernest Shonekan joined the United Africa Company of Nigeria, a subsidiary of the United Africa Company at the time, in 1964 and played an important role in British colonisation.
Shonekan advanced through the company’s ranks and was promoted to assistant legal adviser.
At the age of 40, he also became a deputy adviser and joined the board of directors.
He was appointed chairman and managing director in 1980, and he went on to cultivate a wide range of international business and political connections.
Shonekan took over as head of the transitional council and head of government under Ibrahim Babangida on January 2, 1993.
During that time, the transitional council was intended to be the final stage before the handover of the Third Nigerian Republic to an elected democratic leader.
Shonekan became aware of the government’s dire financial situation, which he was unable to correct.
The government was under pressure to meet international debt obligations and had to hold constant debt rescheduling talks.
After the annulment of the 12 June elections, Babangida resigned from office in August 1993. He issued a decree establishing the Interim National Government, which was led by Shonekan, who was later sworn in as head of state.
Shonekan was deposed by Abacha in a palace coup three months into his presidency, in November 1993.
Shonekan founded the Nigerian Economic Summit Group in 1994 as an advocacy group and think tank for private-sector-led economic development in Nigeria.
Since then Chief Ernest Shonekan went on to feature prominently as an elder statesman.
