Ola Balogun, born August 1, 1945, is a Nigerian filmmaker, playwright, politician, and singer. He created a name for himself with his first film, One Nigerian, a documentary about his opinions on the Nigerian Civil War.
Ola Balogun Early Life and Education
Ola Balogun was born in Aba, Southeast Nigeria, to Yoruba parents. After practicing law in Aba, his father died while he was 12 years old.
Despite his Yoruba origin, Igbo was the first language Balogun mastered.
He attended Christ the King School in Aba from 1951 to 1957 before enrolling at King’s College in Lagos.
Balogun studied at the University of Dakar from 1962 to 1963 before moving on to the University of Caen in France.
He also attended the Institut des Hautes Études Cinématographiques, where he met his classmate Christopher Miles.
Ola Balogun Career
Balogun returned to Nigeria during the Nigerian Civil War, when the country had no native film industry.
In 1969, he worked as a playwright for the Federal Ministry of Information of Nigeria’s film unit before being moved to Paris as the Nigerian embassy’s press attaché.
He wrote and released a play on Shango while he was there. He returned to Nigeria and joined the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ife.
One Nigeria, a documentary about Balogun’s perspective on the Nigerian Civil War, was his first project.
Balogun had visited the battlefront with a French observer group when the war was still ongoing, where he witnessed the devastation caused by the conflict.
One Nigeria and Eastern Nigeria Revisited were inspired by his perspective on the conflict. Balogun, a Nigerian cinema pioneer, began making films in the early 1970s.
With his 1981 picture For Freedom, he attended the 12th Moscow International Film Festival.
In 1973, he founded the Afrocult Foundation, an independent production company.
Balogun released Cry Freedom (previously known as Haraka) in 1980, starring Prunella Gee and Albert Hall.
The film was shot in Ghana, and Balogun used certain A Deusa Negra crew personnel, notably Jose Medeiros.
Cry Freedom is a novel about an uprising that resulted in guerilla warfare in an African nation and was inspired by Meja Mwangi’s Carcase for Hounds.
The film had some supporters among Nigerian intellectuals, but it did not have much of a following overall.
