Afe Babalola, SAN, is a well-known Nigerian lawyer who founded Afe Babalola University. He is a farmer, educator, and former provost of the University of Lagos State (UNILAG).
Afe Babalola Early Life and Education
Babalola revealed that he lost six of his siblings as a child due to poor maternal care. He received his standard six certificate from Emmanuel Primary School in Ado-Ekiti. His formal education ended there. Because he could not afford secondary school fees, he obtained all of the other educational qualifications listed against his name through private study. He later went to university and earned degrees in both economics and law (LL.B).
He holds degrees from several universities, including Ekiti State University, which awarded him an LL.D (hc) in 2002, the University of London, the University of Lagos, the University of Jos, the Federal University of Technology, Akure, and the Kogi State University, among others.

Babalola began his legal career at Olu Ayoola & Co before establishing his own firm, Emmanuel Chambers. He became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria 22 years later. It is the highest level of the Legal Profession. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo appointed him Pro-Chancellor of the University of Lagos in 2001. He founded his own Afe Babalola University in 2009.
His experience of dwindling qualities on standard of education in the University of Lagos where he was the Pro-Chancellor between 2002 and 2007 and other universities usually regarded as the best in the country, informed him of the urgent need to establish a first class university to serve as a benchmark for other universities.
He is a member of the Lincoln’s Inn, London, a registered member of the Bar of England and Wales and a distinguished member of the Nigerian Bar. He has been in practice for about 50 years and is an active uninterrupted member of the Nigeria Bar Association and International Bar Association (IBA). He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Nigeria, Fellow of the Leadership Institute of Nigeria, member of the Body of Benchers, the highest legal body in Nigeria. He was one time Chairman of the Committee of Pro Chancellors of Nigerian Universities.

Afe Babalola began his career at Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, western Nigeria as a litigation lawyer Olu Ayoola and Co, law firm. In 1965, after two years of legal practice, he established his own law firm, Afe Babalola and Co. (Emmanuel Chambers). In 1987, he became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, the highest rank in Legal profession in Nigeria.
In 2001, he was appointed, Pro-Chancellor of the University of Lagos by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, the former President of Nigeria.
