Born Adedoyin Ajibike Okupe on March 22, 1952, Dr. Doyin Okupe is a Nigerian physician and politician. He is well recognized by his professional title, “Dr. Doyin Okupe.” His accomplishments include co-founding Royal Cross Medical Centre[1, 2] and acting as the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention (NRC). He was previously detained under General Sani Abacha’s rule. As a result, he was prohibited from running in the United Nigeria Congress Party primaries (UNCP). Subsequently, he stood for governor of Ogun State as a People’s Democratic Party candidate (PDP).
During their separate spells in office, Okupe was President Olusegun Obasanjo’s Special Assistant on Media and Publicity and President Goodluck Jonathan’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs.
Doyin Okupe Early Life and Education
Okupe is the son of Chief Matthew Adekoya Okupe, who was employed at Agbonmagbe Bank in a banking position. Okupe himself is a banker. On March 22, 1952, Okupe was born in the town of Iperu, which is found in the state of Ogun in Nigeria. His brothers are Kunle Okupe, Owo Okupe, Wemi Okupe, and Larry Okupe, while his sisters are Aina Okanlawon and Bisola Ayeni. His sisters are also his namesakes. Each of his brothers goes by the name Okupe. He earned his schooling at St. Jude’s School in Ebute Metta, Lagos; Igbobi College in Yaba, Lagos; and the University of Ibadan in Ibadan, Oyo State. All three schools are located in Lagos.

In addition to his employment as a medical practitioner, Okupe is active in a wide variety of political groups. In addition to that, at one point in time he served as the publisher of the health publication that was known as Life Mirror.
Medical career
Before founding the Royal Cross Medical Centre (also known as Royal Cross Hospital) in Obalende, Lagos, with his colleagues, Dr. Seyi Roberts and Dr. Ladi Okuboyejo, Okupe worked for many years in both public and private hospitals in Lagos, including the St. Nicholas Hospital. Together, Okupe, Roberts, and Okuboyejo established the Royal Cross Medical Centre (also known as Royal Cross Hospital). During that time, he was exposed to a wide range of medical subspecialties, which allowed him to obtain valuable expertise. At that time, he was employed at the Royal Cross Medical Centre in the capacity of Managing Director (MD).
In an interview given to The Nation (Nigeria) in the month of July 2019, Olusegun Osoba revealed that Okupe and Dr. Seyi Roberts were instrumental in preserving the life of his gatekeeper, who had sustained a gunshot wound to the head on the evening of August 23, 1994.
Political career
During the election for members of the Nigerian parliament that took place in 1983, Okupe stood as a candidate for the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) and attempted to win a seat in the House of Representatives. During this time, Nigeria was divided into two republics.
During the Third Nigerian Republic, Okupe was given the position of National Publicity Secretary by the Republican Convention of the National Republican Party (NRC). It was during the Nigerian presidential election in 1993 that he acted as one of the representatives of the NRC that went to the offices of the National Electoral Commission to monitor the process of collating the results of the election. In 1993, Nigeria conducted elections for the position of president (NEC).
Okupe was put into captivity by the military government led by General Sani Abacha on October 3, 1996.
Later on, during the failed transition program that Abacha was attempting to implement in March 1998, he was one of the politicians who was prohibited from participating in the primary elections for the United Nigeria Congress Party. This occurred during the time period of March 1998. (UNCP).
At the beginning of the Fourth Nigerian Republic, which is now in effect, President Olusegun Obasanjo appointed Okupe to the position of Special Assistant on Media and Publicity. Okupe has held this position since the inception of the Fourth Nigerian Republic. Later on, during the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) primaries in Ogun State in 2002, he was one of the governorship hopefuls and was a significant contender alongside Gbenga Daniel. These primaries took place in Ogun State. In the year 2012, President Goodluck Jonathan made Okupe his choice for the job of Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs. Okupe has held this position since.
Okupe was the publicist for several candidates for the presidency of Nigeria who ran under the PDP banner. These candidates included the incumbent President Olusegun Obasanjo, the former President Goodluck Jonathan, the incumbent Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and the former President Bukola Saraki. Okupe also served as the publicist for former President Bukola Saraki. In July of 2017, he announced to the public that he planned to join the Accord Party after formerly
belonging to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). However, in September of 2018, he was kicked out of the Accord Party for taking a position as the Chairman of the Campaign Media Council of Bukola Saraki for the 2019 presidential primaries of the PDP. This was the reason for his expulsion. Following that, he rejoined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), of which he had been a member in the past, and he became a member of the Presidential Campaign Organization of Atiku Abubakar, the candidate for president of the PDP in Nigeria’s presidential election in 2019.

Okupe and Aduralere Okupe have tied the knot and are now a married couple. One of their sons is called Ditan Okupe, and he is their namesake.
In Nigeria’s general election in 2019, his father, Okupe, cast his ballot for the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, while his son, Ditan, cast his ballot for the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

It was reported in August 2012 that Okupe and his companies were being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and accused of failing to execute road construction contracts awarded to his companies in 2004 by Benue State and in 2005 by Imo State. The allegations were made against Okupe and his companies for failing to execute the contracts. Allegations were made that Okupe and his enterprises had violated the terms of the contracts by neglecting to fulfill their obligations. In the end, a compromise was achieved with the state of Imo, however the disagreement with the state of Benue was arbitrated away.
In July of 2016, it was suspected that Colonel Sambo Dasuki, who was serving as the head of the Office of the National Security Adviser at the time, had embezzled a total of $2 billion in the process of a $2 billion armaments purchase. This controversy is also known as the Dasukigate scam. The EFCC was able to identify Okupe as the source of 702 million of those stolen funds.
On Thursday, January 14, 2019, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Okupe before a Federal High Court in Abuja on a 59-count charge centering on money laundering and diversion of money funds to the tune of 702 million naira. The accusation was brought against Okupe by the EFCC.
