Tunde Kelani Early Life and Education
Tunde Kelani was born in Lagos and moved to Abeokuta, Ogun State, with his grandparents when he was five years old.
He received his primary education at Oke-Ona Primary School in Ikija, Abeokuta, and his secondary education at Abeokuta Grammar School.
Since his grandfather was a chief at the time (the Balogun of Ijaiye Kukudi), he had the opportunity to observe most aspects of Yoruba culture up close.
Yoruba literature, Yoruba philosophy, Yoruba environments, and Yoruba worldview in the arts were among them.
Because the Yoruba people had a strong traveling theater history at the time, he was exposed to Yoruba literature at a young age and was greatly influenced by it.
When Tunde Kelani was in secondary school, he had the opportunity to see most of the great Yoruba theater classics, including Palmwine Drinkard, Oba Koso, Kurunmi, Ogunde plays, and others.
His interest in photography began in elementary school. He aggressively invested money and took the time to master photography during his time in high school.
Therefore, it was inevitable that after he graduated from high school, he became an apprentice photographer.
He received training at Western Nigeria Television (WNTV) in the future before continuing on to the London Film School.
Tunde Kelani Career
In the 1970s, Kelani worked as a correspondent for BBC TV, Reuters, and Nigerian TV. He traveled to Ethiopia for Reuters to cover the drought there and made three trips to Zimbabwe to chronicle that country’s independence.
Tunde started his career as a local photographer, which he learned while in high school. From there, he went to the first television station in Africa, Western Nigeria Television (WNTV) Ibadan, where he honed his photography skills before attending film school in London. After graduating from London, he worked with WNTV and produced his first film with Alagba Adebayo Faleti. The film’s working title was The Dilemma of Rev Father Michael.
Kelani has managed the Cinematography of most popular films in Nigeria. Some of his feature films include: Anikura; Ogun Ajaye; Iya Ni Wura; Taxi Driver; Iwa and Fopomoyo (all 16mm). He has since added The Campus Queen’ Abeni and The Narrow Path, the first set of works to probe further the possibilities of advanced digital filmmaking. His latest film, Dazzling Mirage, was released in 2015.
Tunde Kelani founded Mainframe Films and Television Productions-Opomulero in 1991 so he could make movies instead of only providing technical assistance.
The basis of Kelani’s filmmaking approach, having arisen from the worlds of theater and literature, is the adaptation of novels and plays for the big screen, and through them he celebrates writers and their work for what he perceives to be a public that reads less and less.
